Maruti 6-speed gearbox to be offered on cars from this year, Swift first.
Now if you look at Maruti’s current portfolio of cars, the one thing that you might notice is that all its cars, starting from the Alto to the S-Cross, all run on 5-speed gearboxes. However, that is soon going to change. In a bid to make their cars more driver-centric, the automaker is developing a 6-speed gearbox, codenamed MF30 which will be introduced in its cars from this year.
There isn’t a clear news on which cars will get the 6-speed gearbox but it would be safe to assume that cars like the Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Vitara Brezza, Ciaz and the S-Cross are most likely to get the 6-speed transmission. An additional sixth gear enhances the fuel-efficiency of the cars by allowing for better spacing of gears. For instance, cruising at 80-100 km/hr in the sixth gear does not put much stress on the engine when compared to cruising in the fifth gear.
Nonetheless, this isn’t the first time that Maruti will be using a 6-speed gearbox, it had already used it on the previous-generation S-Cross with the 1.6-litre diesel engine. Having said this, with the current S-Cross, the carmaker decided to discontinue the 1.6-litre diesel engine which came paired with the 6-speed gearbox.
One of the major reasons why the company has decided to offer a 6-speed gearbox is because of the competition. Hyundai offers a 6-speed transmission on its Elite i20, Verna, Creta and Elantra while Tata’s Nexon and the Hexa too come with a 6-speed gearbox. Similarly, Renault offers a 6-speed gearbox on the Duster, Lodgy and the Captur.
